There are at least 500 extra Scottish Christmas retail jobs up for grabs at Glasgow and Dundee shopping centres due to the festive shopping frenzy.
With extra opening hours at Glasgow Fort in the run up to Christmas 2014, the shopping centre has added 300 temporary jobs to cope with thousands of eager customers looking for last minute gifts.
Meanwhile, the Overgate shopping centre in Dundee is taking on 200 temporary workers for their Christmas and New Year period, with big retailers like Debenhams, JD Sports, Next, River Island and Topshop all boosting their employee levels this year.
Explaining why they need to take on so many extra temporary staff this Christmas, Glasgow Fort’s Centre Manager, Phil Goodman, said: “Our midnight opening is very popular for shoppers with busy lives. We have found people appreciate the opportunity of not having to rush around the stores and actually enjoy choosing their gifts at a more leisurely pace.”
And, even though they are closing three hours earlier than Glasgow Fort during the festive period, the Overgate shopping centre in Dundee still needs dozens of extra hands on deck to cope with the surge in shoppers’ demand:
“We are happy to be say we have created almost 200 jobs in Dundee over the Christmas period. Local employment and ongoing employment opportunities is something the centre is keen to support in any way we can, and the hope is a percentage of these Christmas temps will be kept on in a permanent position,” said the centre manager for Overgate, Malcolm Angus.
