Aldi & Lidl To Create 80 New Leicester Supermarket Jobs

German chains Aldi and Lidl could create around 80 new full and part time supermarket jobs in Leicester if they both get planning permission from the city council.

Lidl wants to refurbish existing building in Leicester's Cultural Quarter, whilst Aldi is reviving and revising new-build proposals for a store in the Thurmaston Lane area which were rejected by Leicester city council in 2013. If the green light is given by the council then both stores have the potential to create around 40 new jobs in the city.

A spokesperson for Lidl outlined the company’s new Leicester proposal, saying: “We are delighted to be adding to our stores in Leicester. This long-term programme will see Staples relocate to another unit within the Burton Street site, whilst works will commence to improve access and parking facilities. This project is to begin during 2015, with a view to opening our newest Lidl store in early 2016. We would anticipate the opening of this new store would create approximately 30 to 40 jobs.”

And, of the revised and resubmitted proposals for a new Aldi in Leicester, a company spokesperson said: “Whilst we were obviously disappointed by the outcome of our previous application, we have remained committed. As part of the revised plans, we are proposing a series of works to the surrounding plots of land which will help make the wider site more attractive to prospective businesses, to help to boost investment and create jobs.””

The news comes as Aldi has just announced wider-ranging plans to create over 35,000 supermarket jobs in the UK over the next eight years, as it increases its presence in England, Scotland and Wales to around 1,000 stores. The recruitment plans at Aldi include provisions for them to create at least 600 apprentice jobs in each of the next few years.
