The Yorkshire university city of Sheffield looks set to create approximately 5,000 temporary Christmas jobs for students, youngsters and other local people in the next few weeks.
There will be around 2,000 extra retail jobs this Christmas at the city’s flagship shopping centre Meadowhall, meaning that the number of people working at the retail hub will swell by over 30% to host over 8,500 employees in permanent and temporary positions. Retailers at Meadowhall already say that sales are outperforming last year by around 4 per cent, and if, as expected, the trend continues in the run up to Christmas and over New Year, then they will need to advertise more holiday jobs than they have done for the last few years.
In addition, it is estimated that around 3,000 further full and part time Christmas jobs will be created by other high street retailers and the hospitality industry in Sheffield city centre.
Explaining why more temporary Christmas jobs would be on offer at Meadowhall this year than there were in 2013, the shopping centre’s director, Darren Pearce, said: “People have more confidence and are spending more than they did last year. Our retailers are recruiting more people this year than they have done for quite a number of years.”
Sheffield Council’s Head of City Centre Management, Richard Eyre, echoed Mr Pearce’s optimism for businesses outside Meadowhall too:
“There are no definite figures for the number of seasonal staff taken on in city centre, but I estimate it’s about 3,000, due to the hospitality sector as well as retail. Retailers are looking forward to a bumper Christmas and the possible introduction of the Business Improvement District next year,” said Mr Eyre.
