Over 250 Tesco Supermarket Jobs At New Burton Upon Trent Store

A smaller format Tesco convenience store could generate over 250 full and part time supermarket jobs in Burton upon Trent if the council signs off the retailer’s plans.

The original plans by Tesco were for a large supermarket of over 9,000 square metres which would have provided over 400 Burton upon Trent jobs - but the retailer has adjusted the proposal to a smaller store of around 7,200 square metres. The proposed new development, near the Hawkins Lane area, also features plans for a small restaurant, a petrol station and a non-food retail area.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “The proposals will create approximately 266 new jobs. The proposed store will also have substantial financial benefits for the area. Taking into account the business rates, employment creation and reduction in Jobseeker's Allowance claimants, the development will bring about a £5.7 million boost to the local economy per year.”

Tesco’s plans for the original large format store were passed by East Staffordshire Borough Council three years ago, but the supermarket chain is now targeting smaller developments to cope with increasing demand in the convenience food market.

Explaining the motives behind their updated development proposal in a letter to a local MP, Michael Kissman, communications director for Tesco, said:

“Customer shopping patterns are moving dramatically away from large stores and towards online and convenience, and we expect these trends to intensify sharply. Our intention is to grow the number of large stores at a significantly slower pace in the future, instead focusing our investment in large stores to refurbishing those we have to make them a compelling destination in an era when no-one needs to leave their house in order to shop.”

A supermarket job may not sound like the most glamorous job in the world, but you will pick up some good work experience and a few other perks too. And some of the supermarkets actually pay way above minimum wage for good members of staff.
