KFC, the american chain which specialises in fast food chicken dishes, has announced continued expansion plans which will see them create around 6,500 new full and part time jobs in the UK and Ireland in the next five years.

KFC has opened an average of around 30 new outlets in the UK and Ireland over the last few years and says it can continue that rate of expansion until at least 2019. With a typical KFC store opening creating over 40 new positions, the continued expansion by the american business in the UK and Ireland should create somewhere between 6,000 and 7,000 new full or part time catering jobs before 2020.

The expansion plans will see KFC investing over £100 million to increase their presence on the high streets of the United Kingdom and Ireland. With over 850 current stores in the UK and Ireland, the same rate of expansion would see them hit the 1,000 outlets mark within the next five years.

Speaking to the Telegraph newspaper, KFC’s managing director for the UK and Ireland, Martin Shuker, predicted that a slowdown in the chain’s rate of expansion was not yet visible on the horizon.

“The reality is that we could absolutely keep growing at this rate for the next five years and longer because there’s demand for KFC in geographies where we are not yet present. Other quick service chains have many more restaurant outlets than we do, so, as long as we can keep growing and make sure that our offering is appealing to consumers, I think the ceiling is quite a long way away,” said Mr Shuker.

KFC currently provides jobs for around 24,000 people in the UK and Ireland. That figure will surge through 25,000 by the end of this year and should hit the 30,000 mark before 2020 if Mr Shuker’s expansion plans come to fruition.
