Supermarket chains Asda and Sainsbury’s are set to create over 600 new full and part time supermarket jobs with new store openings in Leicester and Wolverhampton this summer.

Asda will open a new 3,750 square metre supermarket at Leicester’s Pioneer Park at the beginning of June and will create around 260 jobs for the area.

Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s has said it is looking to fill almost 350 new jobs when it opens a new supermarket close to Wolverhampton city centre near the end of June.

Asda has already filled some of the Leicester positions but is still looking for more staff in the area to join their team. Speaking about the new store opening, Dawn Belcher, manager of the new Asda supermarket in Leicester, said:

“Our [Leicester] Abbey Lane store is a fantastic opportunity for the area, both in the jobs we are bringing and the money we hope to save our customers. We have filled about 80 percent of the new roles but we are still recruiting, so we would appeal to people to apply online if they are interested in joining our new team of colleagues.”

And commenting on the new £60 million Sainsbury’s in Wolverhampton and the jobs it will create, Emma Reynolds, a local MP said the announcement was great news for the area:

“It’s great that Sainsbury’s are not only going to be moving to a brand new store that will regenerate that area of the city, but they’re also recruiting 349 people. It’s a tough time at the moment and this is a welcome boost for the city,” said Ms Reynolds.
