New Shopping Complex To Create 400 Retail Jobs In Exeter

A new shopping complex could create up to 400 retail jobs in Exeter if developers Consolidated Property Group (CPG) can secure planning permission from the city council.

The development plans for the complex, which would be named the Exeter Moor Exchange, include provisions for a range of shops, eateries and cafes and is set to be built on land towards the east of the city.

The development plans of CPG will face a public consultation at the beginning of April before being submitted to Exeter City Council. If the plans get the go ahead then work at the site could begin in 2015, bringing around 150 temporary Exeter jobs in the construction phase and a further 400 retail jobs in phased stages as retailers move into the Moor Exchange shopping complex from 2016 onwards.

CPG already owns the Exebridge Retail Park in Exeter, which is home to big retailers like Boots and Next, but says that Moor Exchange will cater more for people working in the area. The shops likely to open at the new shopping complex will therefore include convenience shops catering for the lunchtime trade along with health facilities like chemists and opticians.

Commenting on the future of Moor Exchange, Exeter Chamber of Commerce’s vice president, Derek Phillips, said that development in the area was necessary to support the local workforce, but stressed that it was important the plans didn’t have a negative impact on retailers in Exeter city centre.

Hoping to quell such fears, the managing director of CPG, Martin Ridgway, said:

“A district centre in this location will make key services readily available to thousands of people working locally. The site already holds outline consent for a mixed use scheme with a retail centre and is strategically placed to serve the employment zones of Sowton, Exeter Business Park and the Science Park. I must stress that Moor Exchange is complementary to Exeter’s existing excellent shopping facilities and will not detract from them.”
