4 In Every 5 Private Sector Jobs Created In London

An incredible 4 out of every 5 private sector jobs in the United Kingdom are now being created in the capital London, according to new figures in a report called “Cities Outlook 2014.”

The statistics, produced by think tank Centre for Cities, show how the draw of London is attracting young people from all over the nation to look for work in the capital.

According to the report, a third of young people aged between 22 and 30 are leaving the towns and cities in which they grew up to take advantage of the huge job creation which has taken place in London over the last few years.

Although it might sound encouraging that London is generating so many full and part time jobs for students, graduates and young people, there is a big concern that other regions in the UK are hemorrhaging young talent at an alarming rate.

Over the period spotlighted by the report (2010 to 2012), student areas like Bradford, Glasgow and Sheffield actually saw a decrease in the generation of new jobs in both the public and private sectors. There were, however, some positive results outside of London, with Birmingham and Manchester both boosting the number of private and public sector opportunities over the three years studied.

Commenting on the need to do more to generate jobs all over the country rather than consolidating them all in the capital, chief executive of Centre for Cities, Alexandra Jones, said: “Cities Outlook 2014 shows that the gap between London and other UK cities is widening and we are failing to make the most of cities' economic potential.”

Potential solutions proposed by the Centre for Cities report - and endorsed by deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg, and shadow communities and local government secretary, Hilary Benn - include devolving more central government funding to local city and town councils in order to generate a ‘sustainable, job-rich recovery across the country.’

Of course, we at E4S love to advertise as many full and part time jobs in London as we possibly can - but we also try our hardest to look after student job seekers in every other part of the UK too. Inevitably, we too have a majority of our student jobs in London, but you will also find tons of opportunities outside of the capital in student cities like Manchester, Leeds and Edinburgh.
