Over 180,000 New Construction Jobs In The UK Before 2018

According to new forecasts from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), the UK is set to generate over 180,000 full or part time jobs in the construction sector before the end of 2018.

Over a third of the growth in the construction industry and the tens of thousands of jobs it will create will be driven by the demand for private housing. The 180 thousand construction positions that will be created in the next four years will more than offset the 40 thousand jobs that the sector bled last year. It will, however, still leave the industry some way short of the number of jobs it was providing before recession hit the construction sector heavily in 2008.

Chairman of the CITB, James Wates, is optimistic that a corner has been turned for the construction sector in the UK, but warns that the government, and the industry as a whole, needs to think long term if the growth is to be sustainable.

“Employment in 2018 is predicted to be 196,000 below pre-recession levels, which is why measures must be taken now to ensure growth is sustained over the long-term,” said Mr Wates.

One region that is to set benefit strongly from the resurgent building sector is Wales, where it is estimated that around 1 in 10 of the new full or part time jobs in construction will be created. With that translating to something like 18,000 new jobs for Wales in the next five years, the new positions will be very welcome in the country. As well as an expected increase in new Welsh houses over the coming years, the construction industry in Wales will be driven by a new nuclear facility in Anglesey.

Commenting on where the building trade could go in Wales, policy advisor the Home Builders Federation, Richard Price, said: “After a number of extremely difficult years, house building in Wales is starting to pick up. The Welsh government's Help to Buy scheme is helping address the lack of mortgage lending that has been the biggest constraint on housing supply. If people can buy, builders can build, so creating local jobs both on construction sites and in the supply chain.”

Deputy chairman of the CITB, Judy Lowe, admitted she was surprised by the speed of the turnaround in the sector, saying that the outlook for the industry - and the new jobs it will create - is ‘immeasurably positive’ compared with twelve months ago.
