Aldi & Lidl To Create Thousands Of Supermarket Jobs In 2014

Aldi and Lidl will stack up thousands of new supermarket jobs over the course of the next year as they open dozens of new stores around the United Kingdom.

Aldi expects to increase its number of supermarkets by 10 per cent from the current level of 500 to around 550 during 2014. If the budget supermarket chain opens 50 new stores then it forecasts it will create somewhere in the region of 6,000 full or part time jobs.

Lidl, which currently has around 600 supermarkets in the UK, will also expand, albeit at a slower rate than Aldi, with plans to open stores at 20 new locations in 2014. The Lidl expansion should create a further 2,000 full or part time supermarket jobs.

Commenting on their recent busy holiday period of trading and giving insight into their changing customer demographic profile, a spokesperson for Lidl said: “2013 has seen our best performance to date over the Christmas period. Our upper-middle-class and middle-class customers now make up 24 per cent of all our shoppers.”

Likewise, Aldi also saw record numbers of shoppers visiting their stores over the Christmas holidays and expects to continue the success through into 2014.

Meanwhile, Asda has just announced plans for a new store which could create up to 400 full or part time jobs in Durham. If the plans get the go ahead from the council, Asda would build a new 4,000 square metre store opposite supermarket rival Tesco.

A public exhibition of the new store plans will be held in the city by Asda at the end of this week before the supermarket submits final proposals to the council.

Offering some reasons why he thinks the plans should be passed by Durham County Council, property communications manager at Asda, Philip Bartram, said: “The store will regenerate a prominent, but long-neglected, site. It is a multimillion-pound investment which will provide a major long-term boost to the area. These plans will deliver a fresh and exciting new offer to local shoppers. The creation of up to 400 new Asda jobs is set to make a huge difference to hundreds of household budgets.”
