New TV Series By Sony Pictures & Starz To Create 200 Scottish Jobs

A new TV series from US producers Sony Pictures Television and Starz will be filmed in Glasgow and other regions and could create up to 200 Scottish Jobs, with filming getting under way before the end of the year.

The sci-fi series will be called Outlander and will follow the adventures of a couple, James Fraser and Claire Randall, who travel through time. The series is based on novels by Diana Gabaldon and hopes to rival the success of the hugely popular series Game of Thrones which was produced by the US production company HBO.

Sony Pictures Television and Starz, both US producers, have decided to film in Scotland, in part due to the generous tax relief benefits that apply to the film industry in the UK.

Tax relief on films has been in place since 2007, encouraging producers to make over 1,000 films in the last 6 years. George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, said, however, that the new series by Sony & Starz had been facilitated by last year’s introduction of tax relief for higher-end productions in the United Kingdom.

“I am delighted that Outlander will be filmed in Scotland, and welcome the extra investment that will be made to the Scottish television industry. I hope that this series will make the most of the stunning landscape and the talented actors, crew and facilities that Scotland has to offer,” said Mr Osbourne.

Scottish MP Ruth Davidson was also delighted with the announcement, saying: “This is fantastic news for Glasgow and a testament to all the hard work done to attract the very best of TV and movie talent to the city. The production of Outlander will result in the creation of a substantial number of jobs and a lasting legacy in the form of new studio facilities.”

In addition to the 200 Scottish jobs that will be advertised for production crew, it is also thought that there could be over 2,000 supporting roles for cast members and extras. Sam Heughan, a Scottish born actor who was a student at Glasgow’s Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, has been cast in the lead role of James Fraser, but hundreds of other roles will be up for grabs by other people in Scotland and the rest of the UK.
