Women Graduates More Likely To Land Jobs After Uni

New research from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) shows that women are currently more likely than men to secure a graduate job, or some other form of work, within six months of leaving university.

Of last year’s 400 thousand graduates that the research covers, around 11 per cent of men were still unemployed six months after completing their degree. Women graduates fared much better, with only 7 per cent still not having managed to secure work within the same time frame.

Men, however, still seem to be the winners in the earning power stakes, with the HESA statistics showing that almost a third of male graduates were earning over £25,000 a year, compared to fewer than a fifth of women graduates.

Commenting on the new statistics, Michael Gunn, a Professor and vice-chancellor at Staffordshire University, acknowledged the current difficulties involved in finding a graduate job, but stressed how important a good degree still is in the eyes of employers.

“Six months is a relatively short time to make a judgment about the value of getting a degree and the occupations which graduates will enter in the future. However, these statistics confirm that even in a very difficult labour market studying for a degree on a full-time or a part-time basis remains one of the best ways of securing employment and a career,” said Professor Gunn.

The HESA statistics indicate that almost 9 in 10 UK and EU graduates had now secured a job, gone on to further study, or combined a mixture of the two.
