Degree in northernness

13 Jul 2007

Degree in northernness Students can now go to university to learn about all things northern.

The one-year Masters in Northern Studies, at Leeds Metropolitan University, will run from this September.

The course, thought to be the first of its kind in England, has been launched as part of the university's Institute of Northern Studies.

Students will cover all aspects of life in the north, including politics and history, as well as traditionally northern cultural pursuits such as rugby league and playing in a brass band.

However, Professor Tony Collins, who teaches the social history of sport at the university, told the BBC there would be no place for cliches.

He commented: "As soon as the north is mentioned all these stereotypes are trotted out.

"Ideally, we'd like people to talk about David Hockney, Tony Harrison, Henry Moore, the Beatles, and all these cultural expressions of the north, rather than these stereotypes that are no more than that - stereotypes of whippets and flat caps."

Students from all over the UK are welcome to apply. Apparently interest has been expressed as far afield as Essex.
