Newport Morrisons Could Create 250 Jobs

05 Feb 2013

Newport Morrisons Could Create 250 Jobs Morrisons says that a new supermarket in Newport could create around 250 full or part time Shropshire jobs if it passes planning permission from the local Telford & Wrekin Council.

If agreed, the new Morrisons supermarket at Newport could be open in the first half of next year.

Earmarked for the Audley Avenue area of Newport in Shropshire, the Morrisons store is expected to cover an area of more than 50 thousand square feet.

The original proposals for the site passed outline planning permission last May, but Telford & Wrekin Council is challenging the public inquiry. Morrisons have now submitted a more detailed planning application to the council.

Opponents of the new supermarket voice concerns that big developments such as the Audley Avenue one, along with another proposal by Sainsbury’s, are superfluous to the needs of a town with just 12 thousand residents.

Development executive for Morrisons, Mark Thompson, said: “The site is deliverable, has consent in place and we are now working hard to progress the final design with a view to opening during the first half of 2014. Our Fresh Market concept store will bring choice to Newport while providing an alternative for people who are travelling out of town for their main food shopping.”
