A new Gateshead Tesco Extra will create up to 200 full and part time Tyne & Wear jobs when it opens in May this year.

It is thought that at least 60 of the new Gateshead jobs will be allotted to people who have been unemployed for more than six months. The remaining 140 jobs at the Trinity Square development in Tyne & Wear will be opened up to other interested applicants in a second round of recruitment.

Leader of Gateshead Council, Mick Henry, said this was a major opportunity for people in the town which has more than 20,000 unemployed. Councillor Henry hopes that the Trinity Square development as a whole will create well in excess of 1,000 jobs for job seekers in Gateshead.

Tesco Corporate affairs manager at Tesco, Doug Wilson, said of the new Tyne & Wear opportunities:

“Every person who successfully completes our eight-week pre-employment training course is guaranteed a job in the new Gateshead Tesco Extra store. The telephone line going live is the first step in an exciting four-month process to have all the staff we need trained and ready for the opening on May 20.”
