Retail Proposals Could Bring 1,300 Jobs To Cornwall

Retail Proposals Could Bring 1,300 Jobs To Cornwall Plans for a new retail park in St Austell could create up to 1,300 part time Cornwall jobs for students and locals in the county.

Cornwall College has backed the proposals for 14,000 square metre retail scheme at Coyte Farm in St Austell in a move that it hopes will help unemployment in the town.

With investment plans of over £100 million, the new retail park would feature a hotel, public house, a Sainsbury’s store and a Mark’s & Spencer outlet - bringing new retail, catering and hospitality jobs to Cornwall.

The 1,300 new positions would include graduate jobs and apprenticeships in addition to hundreds of other full and part time jobs for students, young people and St Austell residents.

Deputy Chief Executive of Cornwall College, Raoul Humphreys, said similar programmes had been successful in the past.

“This proposal will provide new jobs for the area and we can craft a training and development programme alongside these. This will enable local people to be equipped to take on the construction jobs while the development is being built and the permanent jobs when the scheme is up and running,” said Mr Humphreys.

Proposals will go before Cornwall Council at the end of this month and, if the green light is given, work could begin at the St Austell site before the end of 2013.
