Ofsted, the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills, has highlighted the importance of good quality work experience while still at school for those pupils who want to move into an apprenticeship after leaving.

With around 1 in 4 apprentices dropping out, Oftsed inspectors have researched 15 of the best quality apprenticeships in the UK to try to understand what makes a good candidate to be an apprentice.

It found that pupils who had completed some form of work experience while still at school were more likely to stay the distance on an apprenticeship.

The 15 schemes researched by Ofsted included the respected apprenticeship programmes run by McDonalds and the Premier League.

Matthew Coffey, National Director for Learning and Skills at Ofsted, said that there have been worries that the quality of recent apprenticeships has not been of a high enough standard. He pointed out, however, that around 7 in 10 apprenticeships could be rated as either good or outstanding, but acknowledged that more still needed to be done to improve the situation for young people.

“It is clear that more work experience, vocational study and course tasters are needed to ensure learners are on the right apprenticeship for them and that they understand the demands of work,” said Mr Coffey.
