Up to 12,000 full and part time jobs for young people could be created in Wales before the middle of 2015 with the introduction of a new scheme to tackle youth unemployment.

A trial of the Jobs Growth Wales initiative will get under way later this year with the full scheme set to start in April next year.

Minister for Education and Skills in the Welsh Government, Leighton Andrews, said that the initiative would seek to help young people between the ages of 16 and 24 to get into work. The National Minimum Wage will be guaranteed for full and part time jobs for at least 25 hours a week.

These placements for young people in Wales will last a minimum of six months, enabling them to gain some work experience while earning some money. Hopefully, the jobs will lead on to more permanent opportunities for the young people who fill the thousands of jobs forecast each year.

“Now, more than ever, it is essential that the Welsh Government makes every effort to ensure that we not only attract business to Wales, but we ensure that we equip people with the skills they need for employment. Our recent draft budget focused on jobs and growth. A key part of that was a commitment to Jobs Growth Wales, our new £75m scheme which will create 4,000 new jobs a year for the next three years,” said Mr Andrews.
