Motorway Could Add 700 Glasgow Jobs

22 Jun 2011

Motorway Could Add 700 Glasgow Jobs The soon to be completed M74 extension could add as many as 700 full or part time Glasgow jobs to the Scottish economy according to the government there.

Two developers, yet to be named, are thought to be keen on signing a deal to invest £14million in a business park in the Clyde Gateway area of the motorway extension. The land where they look set to build the business park has been disused for decades but regeneration could bring new jobs to the region.

Alex Neil, Infrastructure Minister in the Scottish Government, said that when the M74 scheme completes next week it will improve ‘economic, employment and education opportunities’ for people living in Scotland.

“It will particularly unlock enormous potential for urban regeneration programmes in the west of Scotland, including the developments being taken forward by Clyde Gateway. This significant investment in the Clyde Gateway East site, providing 700 jobs, is tangible proof of this potential being achieved,” concluded Mr Neil.

The Chief Executive of Clyde Gateway, Ian Manson, spoke enthusiastically about the planned investment for the project and the Glasgow jobs it could create: “The impending £14m investment from the private sector means 50% of the site begins to get developed within a matter of weeks of the infrastructure works being completed. The resultant 700 jobs will be a significant contribution to our jobs target over the 20-year lifespan of Clyde Gateway.”

Thousands more Glasgow jobs are expected to be created at the Clyde Gateway project over the course of the next twenty years and the Commonwealth Games which takes place in 2014 will provide many full and part time job opportunities for students in the city.
