Huge growth in financial services

25 May 2007

Huge growth in financial services Graduates wanting to enter the financial services sector are in luck - the financial jobmarket is bigger that ever before.

As reported by Accountancy Age, Ernst & Young's ITEM Club has found that employment in the UK's financial services sector has now overtaken that in manufacturing industry.

The new research indicates that the financial sector now employs nearly 30 per cent of the UK's workforce.

Peter Spencer, chief economic advisor of the ITEM Club, said: "Output in the service sector has risen by over three percent a year on average since 1997, which is a remarkable achievement.

"Over half of the new jobs in the last decade have been in financial and business services."

Mr Spencer also emphasised that the standard of applicants needs to be maintained.

He continued: "We need to continue to invest in the skills and training of our workforce to make sure that the UK remains competitive and we need to ensure that our sometimes ageing infrastructure is improved."

In a survey conducted last year by publisher GTI, financial careers were a hugely popular choice with university students.

Investment banking was found to be the most popular future career, with accountancy also ranking very high on the list.
