Tesco Bank is opening up a further 200 new full or part time Glasgow jobs with the planned mortgage section of their business.

Tesco Bank is based in Edinburgh and employs 550 people there. In Glasgow they currently provide jobs for around 450 staff but the total number of Scottish jobs from Tesco will rise to over 2,000 next year.

The company recently announced profits of over £100 million for the first six months of this year, almost doubling their profit on last year. The finance arm of Tesco supermarket has only been running for 3 years but already has 6 and a half million clients taking out their insurance, credit cards, loans and saving products.

Once the 200 new Glasgow jobs are filled, the staff will start work at a call centre in Glasgow's Atlantic Quay. They will help with sales and customer service in preparation for the launch of Tesco’s new mortgage products at the beginning of summer next year.

Tesco Bank chief executive, Benny Higgins, explained how they are going to take on the big banks in the mortgage market, saying: “We are focused on designing mortgage products that are consistent with the Tesco brand; namely, products that are simple, transparent and reward customer loyalty.”

Higgins added that the staff who land the new Glasgow jobs will be crucial to the success of the operation and continued: “I'm very proud that we can create these jobs in Scotland. I'm very encouraged by the quality of applicants for the posts we have advertised.”
