Boots, the UK pharmacist, is said to be taking on 7,000 extra staff in holiday jobs over Christmas 2010 according to an article in The Telegraph. That would match the number of Christmas job vacancies that Boots advertised last year.

Boots provides work for around 70,000 staff in full and part time jobs all over the UK but have recently announced some redundancies.

The main story in The Telegraph article was actually about how Alliance Boots are unfortunately cutting 900 Nottingham jobs in manufacturing, supply chain, management and support roles. Chief executive of Alliance Boots' health and beauty business, Alex Gourlay, told The Telegraph that these full and part time job losses come partly as a result of the merger between Alliance Unichem and Boots 4 years ago. He added that shop jobs were not at risk in their 2,500 stores and that the company were actually looking for 7,000 people to fill holiday jobs in the Christmas break.

According to the Boots website, typical tasks involved in a Christmas job include optimising and restocking displays and increasing customer loyalty. One of the bonuses with a Christmas holiday job at Boots is the fact that discount is given to all workers whether they are full time, part time or temps.
