IT and business skills needed

IT and business skills needed The number of vacancies for IT professionals, particularly those with business skills, has risen sharply in recent months.

According to figures from theitjobboard.com as reported by Onrec.com, the number of IT positions advertised on their website has increased by 25 per cent in the past six months.

The demand for applicants with enterprise resource planning (ERP) skills has risen particularly sharply, by 103 per cent since July 2006.

These statistics serve to illustrate the importance companies now place on the combination of IT competency and business skills in the graduates they employ.

Ray Duggins, managing director of theitjobboard.com, said: "Clearly plenty of jobs available translates into plenty of choice and real career opportunities."

However, he emphasised that many new graduates do not currently have the skills required to excel in many technology-reliant jobs.

He continued: "Very simply, there are not enough skilled and trained IT professionals to fill the number of roles that are available.

"In the shorter term, employers need to be realistic about the high level of competition they face to attract good candidates and make sure they offer remuneration packages that reflect this."

This is good news for those students who do graduate with the correct skills.

Recent research has shown that a large proportion of major technology providers and banks take on graduates who have already completed work experience with them.

These candidates are at an advantage in that they have already built up a number of the business skills so essential in today's technology industry.
