New Wind Turbines Could Bring Graduate Jobs To North East

31 Mar 2010

New Wind Turbines Could Bring Graduate Jobs To North East A new offshore wind turbine facility by German manufacturer Siemens could potentially create new graduate engineering jobs in the North East of England.

The new wind turbine facility, expected to cost £80m, is aimed at meeting the UK’s future demand for renewable energy and could add hundred of new jobs to the workplace.

Ed Milliband, the energy and climate change secretary, welcomed the recent news by saying it was a vote of confidence in the UK offshore wind sector from one of the most respected international companies in the industry. Milliband added that it was further proof that the UK was exploiting its own substantial natural resources. He said: “Siemens' investment will help create jobs and help us meet our renewable energy targets.”

The new Siemens production facility, which is expected to built on the east or north east coast of England, could be fully up and running by 2015. The new turbines could bring up to 700 new general and engineering jobs – hopefully including some North East graduate engineering jobs - to the final chosen location.

Another voice in favour of this current wind turbine plan is Andy Atkins, executive director of Friends of the Earth. Atkins was on record as saying that this was fantastic news for the UK - but suggested that it should only be the beginning: “The next government must make the creation of a low-carbon future an urgent priority. Slashing energy waste and developing our huge renewable energy potential will generate tens of thousands of new jobs, reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and help make the UK a world leader in fighting climate change."

If you are interested in graduate engineering jobs then this is certainly an avenue worth keeping your eye on. We’ll keep you posted with any further developments.
