Another Reason To Get A Part Time Job

18 Nov 2009

Another Reason To Get A Part Time Job Okay, we all know the usual benefits that come with a part time job. A bit of extra cash, more time to do the things you really want to do, a better work-life balance....

But recent research by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has thrown up a less obvious reason for you to get yourself a part time job. The TUC’s report’s statistics show that people who work in part time jobs have a substantially shorter commute on average than those who work in full time positions.

Men with full time jobs take up 60.4 minutes of their precious time just getting to and from work, whilst men in part time jobs only spend 42 minutes commuting. And it’s a similar ratio for the females of the species. Women who work full time waste 52.8 minutes of their day commuting in the Rat Race, but their part time colleagues use up only 38.6 minutes of their time on the return trip to their job.

The General Secretary of the TUC, Brendan Barber, said: "UK staff experience a double-whammy of working some of the longest hours in Europe and then spending nearly an hour every day getting to and from work. All that wasted working time spent stuck on crowded trains and congested roads costs the economy over a quarter of a billion pounds every year, not to mention the stress it causes staff and the time it means they miss spending with friends and family.”

In addition to those benefits, Barber also pointed out that such things as part time work, working from home and introducing more flexible hours would not only reduce the time people spend commuting, it would also save on office space and bring about lower energy costs. That would in turn save companies money and help their workforce benefit from a better work-life balance.

So, do something that’s not just for the good of yourself – but for the whole nation’s economy and well-being – by grabbing yourself one of the part time jobs available on the e4s website today!
