Greggs, the high street baker, has vowed to create 6,000 full or part time jobs in the next few years.
The company - maker of pasties, sausage rolls, sandwiches, wraps, cakes and bread – expects to open 600 or more shops in the coming years. They will start the expansion by opening 50 to 60 new outlets next year and then at least 70 each year thereafter.
Many of the extra shops will be located so as to increase the baker’s footfall in areas like North Wales and parts of Scotland where they feel they could have a stronger presence. It is expected they will bring new both full and part time jobs to industrial and retail parks where lots of potential customers already work.
Their management statement said that there were significant growth opportunities within the UK. They said: "It remains our belief that a further 600-plus shops can be opened in the medium term with little cannibalisation from our existing shops,” adding that this would take their total number of shops to over 2,000, giving them exposure to more customers and enabling them to create some 6,000 new full or part time jobs in the process.
Greggs sales figures look pretty good too, increasing almost 4% on the same period last year. Such sales have allowed not just Greggs but the food retail sector as a whole to hire staff since the financial downturn took hold last September.
