Morrisons recently announced that they would create a total of 7,000 new full and part time jobs this year – 40% more than the company originally forecast for 2009.
Morrisons, the fourth biggest grocer in the UK, hit its original projection of 5,000 new jobs five months ahead of schedule and is looking to add a further 2,000 new full and part time jobs in the second half of the year.
There has been a spate of good news about the job market issuing from the big supermarkets recently. In the past week or two it has been announced that Asda will create 10,000 new jobs and Sainsbury’s will recruit 20,000 staff. Most of those new temporary and part time job opportunities have opened up as a result of record numbers of expected customers over the Christmas holidays.
Morrisons announcement, though, was especially heartening news for students and young people as the company said that a third of the 7,000 new jobs would be given to 18 to 24 year olds. From that age group the supermarket employs over 36,000 people - all of whom receive thorough training. The grocer said that there is a ‘strong emphasis on traditional skills’ with lots of new positions for butchers, bakers and fishmongers.
Norman Pickavance, Morrisons Group HR Director said that, “These opportunities demonstrate the growth of Morrisons, with over 30 new stores opened since the beginning of the year, and the strong opportunities for career progression from the shop floor to the top floor.”
Pickavance also drew attention to the opportunity for long-term career progression saying that 30% of the top executives in Morrisons had started their working-life in-store. He added that 95% of their Store General Managers are promoted internally.
