Asda Creating 10,000 Holiday Jobs For Christmas

15 Sep 2009

Asda Creating 10,000 Holiday Jobs For Christmas Asda, one of the UK’s leading supermarkets, will create 10,000 holiday jobs to steer the company through the busy Christmas and New Year period. These extra positions - which will double Asda’s level of holiday and christmas job staff to a total of 20,000 - are in addition to a further 7,000 permanent positions that the supermarket have said they will create by the end of the year.

Asda say that in the last year they have brought one million new customers through their store doors. At least a part of this growth can be put down to customers seeking better value in the economic slowdown.

The news of Asda’s 10,000 holiday jobs comes on the back of news that Sainsbury’s is to recruit 20,000 seasonal staff for the festive period.

Christmas is always a busy period for the major supermarket chains but this current drive to fill Asda’s 10,000 holiday jobs reflects the fact that this year they are expecting record numbers. Asda's chief operating officer, Andy Clarke, said, “We're expecting this to be our biggest Christmas ever, as we are offering more low prices than any other supermarket.”

Clarke said that the seasonal positions would make ideal student jobs or could be filled by anyone looking for part time work over the Christmas break. Around seventy percent of Asda’s holiday job workers - employed during Christmas, Easter and other Bank Holidays - are aged between 18 and 24.
