Sainsbury’s, Britain’s third biggest supermarket chain, is looking to recruit 20,000 people into holiday jobs to help them deal with increasing customer levels over the Christmas and New Year period. That is the largest number of holiday jobs that Sainsbury’s has ever created in one phase. For the festive period last year, Sainsbury’s filled 12,000 seasonal jobs.
The supermarket, which has 150 thousand staff working at over 800 stores, also expects that at least 1,000 of the new recruits will move from the holiday jobs to permanent positions in the longer term. These new positions are over and above the 2,300 new jobs that the company is creating in northern England and Scotland in the summer of 2010.
Director of retail human resources at Sainsbury's, Helen Webb, said that nearly 23 million shoppers visited Sainsbury's supermarket last year in the week leading up to Christmas and, “the huge numbers of customers means that our in-store colleagues always have something different to do." She added that they are looking to fill the positions with ‘people who take pride in delivering exceptional customer service and who enjoy working as part of a team.'
The announcement follows more encouraging job news from other supermarkets. Tesco recently announced that it was creating 800 jobs in Glasgow and Morrisons have said that they will recruit 7,000 people this year.
