‘Sunemployment’ Campaign Securing Full And Part Time Jobs

09 Sep 2009

‘Sunemployment’ Campaign Securing Full And Part Time Jobs The Sun newspaper has recently started a ‘Sunemployment’ campaign to help people find full and part time jobs – and it seems to be working well with a string of large employers endorsing the scheme.

Matalan has just backed the red-top’s campaign and announced that it is creating 300 full and part time jobs in Manchester, Colindale in North London and Elgin in Scotland.

Matalan will also recruit a further 1,500 for seasonal and temporary jobs leading up to Christmas. Matalan already has 203 stores around the UK and recently the chief executive, Alistair McGeorge, said there was scope for a further 100 in the next few years. They are also one of the few retailers who are beating the recession with sales being up 8 percent on last year.

Amin Kassam, retail director of Matalan said: "We are looking forward to recruiting new colleagues to help us grow the business."

Also adding weight to The Sun campaign is McDonald’s. Last week the fast food retailer said that it was hoping to recruit for 4,000 full and part time jobs in an effort to introduce earlier opening hours for the breakfast market. Steve Easterbrook, the UK chief executive of McDonald’s, said to the newspaper that he thought the campaign could make a real difference. He added that, ‘We need to get young people back into work.’

Others names backing The Sun campaign include the AA, Tesco, Luminar Leisure, Comet and banking company Santander.
