Research by the Halifax bank suggests that the number of students taking on full and part time jobs to support their study is increasing.
The Halifax found that just short of three quarters of students have a full or part time job at the moment. That figure includes the 46% of students who hold down a part time job in term time. These numbers are up on last year when the respective figures were 66% and 41%.
It is thought that the increase can be put down in large part to the current economic slowdown putting a brake on household spending. 15% of the students questioned were concerned that their parents might not be able to fully support them through their academic career and so had to top up funds themselves.
The research also highlighted some regional differences in student finances with those in Northern Ireland being most likely to work during term time. Students in the south-east of England were least likely to have a full or part time job whilst studying.
The current account director for the Halifax bank, Mike Regnier, acknowledged that it is more important these days that students make every penny count. He pointed out that, "This includes sensible budgeting and keeping the cost of debt to a minimum."
