CAFOD (the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development) has announced gap year opportunities for 18-30 year olds. Named ‘Step into the Gap’, the gap year is in partnership with the Youth Ministry Team in Hexham and Newcastle and St Mary’s College in Blackpool.
The first part of the year out will take place in England with either the YMT or the chaplaincy team at St Mary’s. Later, there will be a four to six week overseas placement in ‘one of the poorest countries in the world’ where you will ‘meet amazing people and share their lives.’ You will then head back to England to finish your year out where it began.
The CAFOD website says that to be eligible for the gap year you must be 18-30 years old, open to challenges and willing to step outside your comfort zone. They also say that you must be, ‘committed to social justice, your faith or school community, and to sharing your faith and experiences. Interested in global justice with a passionate desire to do something about it. Self-motivated and willing to work with others - particularly young people.’
CAFOD will take care of travel costs and will provide a monthly allowance in addition to accommodation throughout the gap year. There will also be training in communication with young people – focusing on elements of faith and social justice.
If you are interested in this opportunity then have a look at the YMT and St Mary’s College websites to decide where you would like to be based. The application deadline for YMT is 9 June, with interviews taking place on 20 and 21 June. The deadline for St Mary’s is 12 June and interviews will be held on 25 June.
For other year out and temporary opportunities take a look at the e4s gap year section where we currently have around 100 openings.
