The Ministry of Defence [MoD] has emerged as the most popular government department for graduate schemes.

In the recent Universum UK Graduate Survey, the MoD came in third place overall when votes were cast by humanities, engineering and science graduates.

A spokesperson for the MoD emphasised the importance the organisation places on its graduate training program.

He said: "We invest very heavily in graduates making it very possible for them to get a chartership status in their chosen profession within just four years of joining the MoD."

According to the MoD, their "premier development scheme" for graduates is the Fast Stream.

This is an accelerated development route which can eventually lead to senior positions in a number of different departments in the civil service.

Many students sit the exams for Fast Stream civil service employment while still at university.

The Environment Agency, the NHS and the civil service were other public sector bodies that fared well.

Overall, accounting and consultancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers was named as the number one company for graduates to work for.
