Half of graduates will look for jobs not directly related to the subject studied at university, according to a new study.

Research by financial services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers found that 50 per cent of final year students plan to look for work not relevant to their degree, reports milkround.com.

The study also found that 80 per cent of graduates are increasingly concerned about their future career than they were 12 months ago, while 42 per cent of respondents also said they expected to receive less pay when entering the workplace than they had originally hoped.

Sonja Stockton from PwC told the site the "overwhelming" response emphasised the need for university students to "think as early as possible" about their options after graduation.

"In a tight job market, students need to examine how their non-academic skills can combine with a good-quality degree to make their application and experience distinctive," she added.

The CIPD Recruitment, Retention and Turnover Survey recently found that 71 per cent of companies are attracting graduates by using their brand image.
