Student designer makes his mark with fashion leader

Student designer makes his mark with fashion leader Worried that work experience might prove a waste of time? Take heart from the story of Nick Thomas, a student on a work placement at a leading knitwear fashion house who has made an outstanding impression.

The design team at Smedley clothing were so taken with the designs of Nick, a fashion and textiles student at the University of the West of England (UWE), that they requested permission to use two of them in their men's winter range.

Smedley clothing is regularly worn in the highest celebrity circles, with Tom Cruise, Madonna and others regularly sporting knitwear by the brand.

Mr Thomas arrived at his two-week placement with his portfolio of designs, but couldn't believe his luck when he got such a positive response.

He told the Bristol Evening Post: "I was totally stunned. When they told me they wanted me to work on a project I thought that was their way of trying to keep me busy and making me feel like I was involved in something. I never imagined my work would be up to the standards they require."

This encouraging tale should give a boost to all those students soon to enter the job market for the first time. Who knows what might happen?
