New degree offers police training

09 May 2007

New degree offers police training A newly-launched degree course should help potential police recruits gain operational experience while they are students.

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has teamed up with Lancashire Constabulary to offer the first foundation degree course in policing.

The course, for students who want to be either a uniformed officer or a member of police staff, will be run by the university's Department of Forensic and Investigative Science.

John Thompson, course leader, said: "The degree programme is a unique opportunity and equips graduates with an academic qualification and the knowledge and skills relevant to careers within the police service."

Stuart Villiers, head of training at the Lancashire Constabulary, also emphasised the importance of the course.

He said: "Those who successfully complete the programme have the opportunity to apply to the constabulary as technically pre-qualified constables capable of undertaking independent patrol on entry."

Course numbers will initially be limited to 40 students per year.
