"Golden hello" for teaching graduates?

11 May 2007

"Golden hello" for teaching graduates? Students studying to become teachers might soon find it a bit easier to pay off their debts - it has been suggested that some should receive "golden hellos" when they start work.

Alan Johnson, education secretary, suggested the financial incentives should be part of a raft of measures to attract high quality teachers to work in tough inner city schools.

In a letter to Graham Holley, chief executive of the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA), Mr Johnston said: "Ensuring that schools serving areas of high disadvantage have good quality teachers will be critical if we are to make progress on narrowing social class achievement gaps.

"This might include…consideration of more targeted use of incentives such as Golden Hellos."

Mr Johnson also emphasised that he wanted more men to work in primary schools, as well as more teachers from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Tony Blair's son Nicky, an Oxford undergraduate, has recently signed up for Teach First. This programme trains high-flying graduates to work in difficult inner-city schools.
