And if you are asking yourself is bricklaying a good career choice, well read on and you can decide for yourself. Because, once you have completed your Apprenticeship in Bricklaying, you will have nationally recognised qualifications and skills that are in demand - these can open many doors for you.
What Does A Bricklayer Do?
Bricklayer jobs could see you working on building sites, building houses and other constructions. You could be repairing walls and chimneys and even getting creative with decorative brick work. If you become a bricklayer, some roles could even take you abroad if you want to work overseas.

Bricklaying Apprenticeships are not for everybody. You will need to be prepared to work outside in all types of weather. You will also need a certain level of fitness as you will have to be able to carry heavy materials and climb to various heights around construction. If you love the idea of working outdoors and be able to see your work around the neighbourhood then you are going to find Bricklayer Apprenticeships really rewarding.
Army Bricklayer Apprenticeships
Did you know you could do Bricklaying Apprenticeships in the army with the Royal Engineers? If you want to combine learning a trade with military service, this could be ideal for you. Bricklayers are vital to the army. An Apprenticeship in Bricklaying in the army will equip you with the specialist skills to build bridges and runways for aircraft as well as the other core skills of the trade.

Whatever type of environment you are working in, Bricklayer Apprenticeships and future bricklayer jobs will often see you working as part of a team along with other bricklayers, labourers and even people within other trades in the construction industry. This job is a real team effort.
What Is A Bricklayer’s Salary?
Of course, if you are considering this career, you are going to want to know what the bricklayer salary is. Well, that all depends on your employer and the type of bricklayer jobs you are doing. If you are already working on a building site, for example and have done bricklaying courses then your employer might keep your wage the same whilst you complete your Apprenticeship.

Bricklayer Apprenticeship wages are set to minimum levels depending on your age. Again, depending on your employer, you could receive these minimum Bricklayer Apprenticeship wages sums or you might get a higher sum. If you are doing army Bricklayer Apprenticeships, you will be paid according to army pay scales.

As you gain more experience, you should be able to command a higher bricklayer salary especially if you attend more specialist bricklaying courses. Your skills will be in higher demand.
How Do Bricklaying Apprenticeships Work?
Bricklayer Apprenticeships are designed to set you up with the skills to carry out your role effectively and safely. The great thing about the Bricklayer Apprenticeship Standard is that it has been drawn up by a team of skilled tradespeople and professionals who are in the construction industry. These are the guys who know the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in bricklayer jobs and also make sure you are part of a team that is driving the UK’s construction industry forward.

When you do your Apprenticeship in Bricklaying, your experience will differ from those also doing the same Apprenticeship depending on your place of work. Obviously, if you are doing army Bricklayer Apprenticeships, you will be in a completely different environment to someone who is doing bricklayer jobs building a housing estate. And your experience will be different again if you are Apprentice bricklayer for a small building firm that builds extensions or maintains and repairs people’s homes.

However, what is great about Bricklayer Apprenticeships is that wherever you work, you will learn the same nationally recognised skills and behaviours whilst gaining a knowledge of the wider construction industry at the same time.

Bricklaying Apprenticeships are about so much more than learning how to lay bricks. You will also learn about:
  • Health & Safety - This includes current legislation and how to use equipment responsibly and safely.
  • Customer Service - Your customers are the people who are going to give you your reputation in the future. You will learn how to provide good customer service and respect their property. You will also learn how to deal with other tradespeople and suppliers professionally.
  • Communication - Bricklayer Apprenticeships will teach you how to communicate effectively with people in various situations.
  • Buildings - As an Apprentice Bricklayer, you will also learn about buildings from different eras and also building construction such as damp proof courses and insulation methods.
  • Energy Efficiency - Bricklaying Apprenticeships will give you a knowledge of the importance of ventilation and insulation.
  • Materials - When you become a bricklayer, you will need to have an awareness of the best materials to use in a given situation and also their cost.
  • Alternative Construction Techniques - There is more than one way to construct a building. An Apprenticeship in Bricklaying will make you aware of different techniques.
  • Radial and Battered Brickwork - Not just building in straight lines, Bricklaying Apprenticeships will also give you a knowledge of more complex bricklaying techniques such as arches, concave and convex plans.
  • Feature and Reinforced Brickwork - Bricklaying jobs also require the tradesperson to be able to create complex decorative features. Your Apprenticeship in Bricklaying should give you a knowledge of this.
  • Fireplaces and Chimneys - Choosing the correct materials for different types of fireplaces and chimneys.
As well as this core knowledge, as an Apprentice Bricklayer, you will also learn the corresponding core skills and behaviours so that you can apply your knowledge in your place of work and communicate with customers and others in the trade at an appropriate level.
