Reports to: Global Head of Construction & Facilities
Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and commercially minded Director of Store Design & Development, US to lead the creative and operational development of all Black Sheep Coffee stores across the United States.
Reporting directly to the Global Head of Construction & Facilities, this role will be responsible for shaping and maintaining the overall US store design strategy, including modular store design, GA plan development, look and feel renders, finish selections, material standards, and brand environment consistency.
This is a senior regional leadership role focused exclusively on the US market. The successful candidate will oversee the evolution and implementation of scalable store formats that support rapid growth while maintaining Black Sheep Coffee’s global brand identity and customer experience standards.
The role will work closely with Construction, Operations, Procurement, Real Estate, Marketing, and external consultants to ensure all US stores are commercially effective, operationally efficient, and delivered to a consistently high standard.
A key aspect of the role will be partnering closely with the appointed US franchise architect to coordinate technical drawing production, local compliance solutions, and design execution throughout the development process.
Responsibilities:
US Store Design Leadership
- Own and evolve the US store environment standards, ensuring consistency across all customer facing spaces
- Develop scalable modular design solutions to support rapid rollout across multiple US markets and store formats
- Lead the development of US store GA plans, prototype layouts, and space planning standards
- Oversee the production of look and feel renders and presentation materials for new store concepts and design evolution
- Ensure all US stores align with Black Sheep Coffee’s global brand identity while adapting appropriately for regional requirements
- Partner with the Global Head of Construction & Facilities on future concept evolution and expansion strategy
Materials, Finishes & Brand Environment
- Own all US finish schedules, FF&E standards, and material specifications
- Curate and maintain material palettes that align with brand positioning, durability, operational requirements, and commercial objectives
- Build and manage relationships with US-based vendors, manufacturers, and suppliers
- Identify value engineering opportunities that maintain design integrity while improving rollout efficiency and cost control
- Standardise material selections and store components where appropriate to improve scalability and consistency
Design Coordination & Technical Delivery
- Partner closely with the appointed franchise architect to deliver technical drawing packages and compliant design solutions across the US estate
- Coordinate external architects, consultants, and design partners to ensure timely and high quality project delivery
- Ensure smooth integration between creative design intent and technical execution
- Support construction teams throughout delivery to maintain design standards on site
- Improve coordination processes to minimise RFIs, design conflicts, change orders, and delays
Commercial & Strategic Responsibilities
- Support the US expansion strategy through commercially effective and operationally practical store design
- Balance customer experience, operational functionality, speed of rollout, and cost efficiency
- Drive standardisation and process improvement across the US development programme
- Provide regular reporting and strategic updates to the Global Head of Construction & Facilities regarding pipeline progress, risks, and opportunities.
Requirements:
- Ideally 10+ years’ experience in retail, hospitality, restaurant, or multi-site commercial design within the US market
- Proven experience developing modular store concepts and scalable rollout programmes
- Strong experience producing GA plans, prototype layouts, and store environment standards
- Experience leading brand design direction and customer environment development
- Strong understanding of US construction methods, permitting, materials, and coordination processes
- Experience managing external architects, consultants, render teams, and vendor relationships
- Background working within fast growth or multi-unit development businesses
