How Students Can Help in the Fight Against Covid-19

21 Jan 2021

The Covid-19 pandemic has been part of our lives for close to a year now, but with the huge strides in the rate of vaccinations being given out, there is hope on the horizon for normality to resume. With the NHS recently moving toward vaccinating groups 1-4; all those over 70 and clinically extremely vulnerable people, great progress has already been made since the start of the year, and more hands are needed to assist in this mammoth task.

There is no doubt this is a period of our lives we will look back on in years to come. Whether you are a student looking for work, or you want to play your part of fighting off the virus, regardless of experience and qualifications, we aim to outline some of the way’s you can help in the fight against Covid-19.

NHS Jobs

Starting off directly with those who have been at the forefront of the fight against Covid-19. The NHS have a range of Covid-19 vaccine related jobs on their website, where you will play a key part in the Vaccination Programme. All these roles are paid, and there are numerous available all around the UK;

These roles include:
- Covid-19 Vaccination Programme Vaccinator
- Covid-19 Vaccination Programme Registered Health Care Professional (Immunisations)
- Covid-19 Vaccination Programme RHCP Clinical Supervisor (Immunisations)

Although the last 2 roles do require previous healthcare experience, full training is provided for the Programme Vaccinator role, meaning there are little barriers to applying. The Programme Vaccinator role, most suited for students, pays very well, ranging from a competitive £10.09 to £11.19 per hour over a 3–6-month period.

If you are interested to see if you are a suitable fit, please click here to head the NHS Vaccine Jobs site. The application is fairly straightforward and depending on the role there are different stages.

Covid-19 Vaccine Research Trials

Millions have already received their first shot of a vaccine, but with a population of 66million+, there is still a long way to go. Whilst the UK currently has three vaccines approved for use; Pfizer, Oxford-AstraZeneca and Moderna (roll out in Spring), there are still some other vaccines in the testing phase.

The NHS are searching for people to sign up, to then be contacted about being part of approved UK coronavirus vaccine studies. All you need to do is sign up. If researchers believe you are suitable for a study, you will be invited to discuss more about the study.

Disclaimer: Please do not treat this as a way to get the vaccine. Be sure to read through the details on the page and if you are contacted, ask any questions you may have.

Online Tutoring Roles

This is slightly more indirect towards the fight against Covid-19 however, you will be helping pupils or even university students who are unfortunately missing out on proper education in the classroom.

You may be skilled towards a certain subject, such as maths or science, or a hobby like playing a musical instrument. There are thousands of pupils using online tutoring platforms to make up for the shortfall in teaching they have experienced over the past year, and you may have the skills and knowledge to help them.

Thanks to online platforms, becoming an online tutor is quick and simple. You are able to decide your hourly rate as well as when you work, meaning you can work as much or as little as you like, as long as you are able to attract students.
