British Airways Offering 100 Scholarships To Help Pilots Take Off In Their Careers

British Airways has opened up applications for 100 scholarships which are designed to get new pilots into the company’s ranks.

The British Airways’ Speedbird Pilot Academy cadet scheme launched for its second year last week (16th April 2024) after a hugely successful trial in 2023.

Last year, over 20,000 hopefuls applied for the 100 places on the scheme, giving them just a 1 in 200 chance of landing a seat on the plane.

It is expected that the 2024 intake will be just as competitive, with successful applicants having the complete estimated training cost of £100,000 paid for by British Airways.

The Speedbird Pilot Academy was launched last year in an effort to allow people from all backgrounds an opportunity to train as a pilot.

Traditionally, a career path as a pilot has been limited by the prohibitive costs involved in learning how to fly - but now, these scholarships smooth the runway for many more people to consider the cockpit as a viable option.

Launching the scheme this year, the director of flight operations at British Airways, Simon Cheadle, said: “We’re incredibly proud to be able to open the door to a flying career to more people through this programme.”

“We know from the overwhelming response and high standard of applications we had in the first year of Speedbird Pilot Academy, that there are a lot of talented people who just need a little bit of help to achieve their dream of becoming a commercial airline pilot and we are pleased to give them that opportunity.”

“We want to continue to attract the very best flying talent and our investment in this programme will help to ensure our future generation of pilots for years to come,” added Mr Cheadle.
