Job Description

DataStax powers the Right-Now Enterprise with the always-on, distributed cloud database built on Apache Cassandra™ and designed for hybrid cloud. We are seeking candidates for its Data Privacy Fellowship. This is a data protection and compliance focussed role that advances the DataStax privacy program in support of DataStax's business and legal goals.

The Fellowship is a paid full-time 9-month role. The Data Privacy Fellow will work as part of the DataStax legal team and report to our Senior EMEA Counsel. While the fellow can work from anywhere in the EU, US, or Canada, our preference is for the fellow to spend at least 60% of the work week in a DataStax office in Windsor, Cork, Paris, or Berlin.

The Data Privacy Fellow will be responsible for important contributions to the company’s privacy program, and will also receive mentoring from the company’s senior legal counsel and be eligible for company-funded privacy training provided by the International Association of Privacy Professionals as well as an opportunity to visit the group HQ in California.

The Data Privacy Fellowship is designed to prepare the fellow for a career in the field of data privacy, whether working with a multi-national company, a law firm, or a government agency.

The Data Privacy Fellow will:

- Have responsibilities for the day-to-day operation of the DataStax privacy programme, including by assessing and negotiating with DataStax vendors, responding to customer inquiries and questionnaires, and maintaining the DataStax data inventory;

- Research and evaluate the scope of laws relating to data security and privacy outside the EU (e.g. Australia, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong) to provide practical advice with a view towards advancing business goals while complying with all applicable laws;

- Collect supporting material for government declarations or registrations;

- Test and use selected company products to evaluate and document each product’s data privacy implications;

- Assist in the development and delivery of privacy training materials for company employees;

- Assist with auditing company practices with respect to data collection, data retention and data access controls;

- Participate in a cross-functional data breach simulation exercises to test the company’s readiness for responding to a breach;

- Get valuable hands-on experience developing and delivering an end-to-end corporate compliance program;

- Advise DataStax on legal and compliance matters.

Job Requirements:

- While we will consider qualified applicants from varied backgrounds, candidates with the following experience and skills will be favourably considered:

- Relevant work or educational experience in law, privacy and/or IT (it is not essential that the candidate have formal legal qualifications, though the candidates must be prepared to engage in extensive reading and writing);

- Reliable self-starter who learns quickly;

- A candidate able to spend at least 60% of the work week in a DataStax office in Windsor, Cork, Paris, or Berlin DataStax office.
