Apprentice Highways Operative – 2018 Programme
Our apprentice programme is a great opportunity to gain a recognised academic or vocational qualification from college, with on-the-job training giving you the chance to earn while you learn, whilst employed full-time at Skanska.
As a Highways Operative Apprentice, you will learn and conduct the main duties and tasks of a highways maintenance operative.
What you’ll do:
- Complete various tasks in order to support the project team.
- Locate underground services, including gas and power cables, working safely around them.
- Carry out maintenance to the highway to keep roads safe and traffic flowing.
- Install, maintain and work within temporary traffic management.
- Work with a wide range of power tools and plant to repair potholes, replace pavements and lay new surfaces.

Personal Qualities :
Who you are:
- Ready to work towards a Level 2 NVQ.
- No previous experience in construction is required but you will want to help us shape the future and build for a better society.
- Happy to work outdoors in all weathers.
- A good team player.
- Have a degree of work-readiness, including punctuality, an understanding of safety in the workplace, and willingness to adhere to rules and regulations.
Skills Required :
- Hold a driving licence or be willing to obtain this as soon as you are able – some sites are remote and driving will be an important part of the job.
