To be a highways maintenance apprentice, you will need:

  • A good level of fitness

  • A good education level, especially in maths and English in order to progress within the sector

  • Basic mechanical knowledge and the ability to solve problems and communicate clearly

Highways maintenance workers are often employed in construction jobs throughout the country, where they are tasked with working on roads, highways, and rights-of-way which can be accessed by the general public. This will include:

  • Setting up temporary traffic lights where vehicle management is required during highway repair operations

  • Operating, maintaining, and transporting construction equipment, supplies and materials.

This labour-intensive occupation is physically demanding, and workers are often subjected to changing weather conditions and hazardous situations as the seasons change.

Time served highways maintenance operatives are at a premium in the current labour market and can earn excellent rates of pay once qualified. This makes on-the-job training an important aspect of securing long-term work.

The successful candidate will be able to start their career through our apprenticeship scheme, combining practical and theoretical training, with working alongside an experienced worker.

Prospective labourers will need to acquire knowledge of safety and legal precautions such as NRSWA “New Roads & Street Works Act” to work in the industry.

The main duties of the apprenticeship will include the above, plus any additional duties and responsibilities that may reasonably be expected to be undertaken in accordance with the role

Personal Qualities :

  • You will be punctual, reliable, enthusiastic and eager to learn.

  • You will be physically able to cope with the demands of the role  and enjoy working outdoors.

  • You will be able to follow instructions, work as part of a team and have a flexible attitude towards working hours.

Skills Required :

You will need to show a keen interest in the construction sector, enjoy practical work and have good practical skills.

Future Prospects :

  • Kier are looking to expand their team and recruit a candidate to undertake the apprenticeship training whilst in full-time employment with them.

  • You must show the desire and motivation to progress your career by working hard and adhering to the terms and conditions of employment.

  • This is a fantastic opportunity for the successful candidate to start their career with a highly reputable and well-established company.
