Background to the Post



Over the last 5 years we have recruited a team of Personal Training and Wellbeing apprentices to support and increase the delivery of high quality personal training, sport and wellbeing sessions for our staff and students. In recognition of this successful programme with excellent destinations and positive results with staff and students, we are aiming to recruit five talented, committed and enthusiastic sports people who wish to develop a career in personal training and sport. This is an area of provision for the College falling within the work of Worthing College Academy of Sport Strategy.



A team of Personal Training and Wellbeing apprentices is required to deliver gym and sports and active leisure wellbeing activities for students and staff here at the College. Apprentices will be line managed by our Sports Development Co-ordinator.



Personal Training and Wellbeing Apprentices will complete the requirements of the Exercise and Fitness Level 3 apprenticeship framework. Before completing the Level 3, Apprentices will complete a Level 2 Certificate in Exercise and Fitness if this has not already been attained.



Worthing College is equipped with a state of the art Life Fitness gym and it is planned to offer a timetable of weekly gym or activity (e.g. Netball, Football, Handball etc.) session as we seek to provide an outstanding learning and wellbeing experience for our students and staff. Students will also be able to drop in to use the gym or join activity sessions when not timetabled and the gym facility will be used heavily by our elite sports performance students.



Worthing College is an established centre of sporting excellence and the Academy of Sport strategy outlines five operational strands, including:




  1. Sports Education.

  2. Sports Performance.

  3. Sports Apprenticeships.

  4. Active Health and Wellbeing.

  5. Community and Partners.



Duties and Responsibilities:



Personal Training and Wellbeing Apprentices duties will normally include:-




  • Planning, delivering and evaluating high quality personal training, sport and wellbeing sessions for our students and staff.

  • Developing and delivering personal training, sport and wellbeing sessions and programmes.

  • Preparing documents and materials for use by students and staff or for display.

  • Answering the telephone and dealing with telephone enquiries.

  • Photocopying and printing a range of documents.

  • Filing and record keeping including updating electronic database records.

  • Helping at events (sometimes outside of the normal working day).

  • Support in local community events.

  • Health & safety in the gym.

  • Cleaning of the gym.



Personal Training and Wellbeing Apprentices will also be responsible for –




  • Working independently, managing your own resources and professional development.

  • Dealing professionally with pupils, students, club members and colleagues.

  • Taking initiative and leading on delegated areas of responsibility.

  • Ensuring a professional appearance and approach to work.

  • Promoting equality and diversity and British Values in sport and active health and wellbeing.

  • Ensuring that health and safety requirements are promoted and met in all planned provision.

  • Learning and deploying a range of new skills to become an excellent team member and a skilled, reliable individual.

  • Engaging in Personal Development.

  • Through the completion of all apprenticeship framework requirements ensure that personal development in completed by deadline and to the highest standard.

  • Create a legacy for the apprenticeship opportunity at Worthing College and be proud of own achievements and those of others.

  • Maintaining accurate attendance records so as the impact of the partnership and delivery model can be audited and measured.

  • Promote their work and the positive impact it has on their own and others’ lives.

  • Accompanying students to sporting events when required.

  • Working with the Worthing Schools Sports Association

  • Any other duties reasonably delegated by the Principal.



The postholder will be a member of the Worthing College Academy of Sport Community and Partners team.


Personal Qualities :

  • A strong knowledge of the organisation of sport in the UK.

  • The ability to be a good team member.



Skills Required :

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Good IT skills and a strong desire to develop further.

  • Good communication (spoken and written) and number skills and a strong desire to develop further skills.
