Job Description

The apprentice groom reports to the Stable Manager and must work as part of a team. Days off will be on a rota basis.



The apprentice is given a minimum of 2 lessons a week and required to work towards their apprenticeship qualifications, which is administered by Haddon Training. They are further encouraged to take BHS examinations Stage I, 2, 3 and 4. The school undertakes to repay half the entry fee for successful candidates in these BHS examinations. You will receive daily work based training.



Duties and Responsibilities;




  • Feed, muck out and groom stabled horses and maintain the high standard of the yard with some duties involving the grass kept horses

  • Prepare horses for lessons

  • Receiving horses on arrival and itemising equipment

  • Preparing horses, equipment and transport for competition and other outings and receiving them on return, ensuring all equipment is put away and transport cleaned

  • To be responsible for the horses given to you to care for, and to be involved in the routine of the yard. There will be some weekend duty work on a rota system. This may include travelling to shows. Yard duties will be directed by the Stable Manager

  • Load and unload horses on the horse walker

  • Turn out and catch in horses from the fields

  • Travel to shows and other outings, as required

  • To undertake some night time stable checks and participate in house cleaning rotas on a rota basis

  • To take specific areas of responsibility as defined by the Stable Manager

  • To lead by example in terms of appearance and behavior



You will also be required to work on certain days such as Summer Celebration, school competitions (held on site), exam days etc. If these fall on your day off, you will be entitled to a day off in lieu.



The stables are open in term time from 6:45am to approximately 6:30pm. The staff are allocated a lunch break during the day on a shift basis.




  • Annual holiday must be taken during the school holidays.

  • Some Millfield Equestrian Clothing will be provided (jacket, fleece, polo shirt PPE kit).

  • A deposit of £30 will be withheld from the first month's salary returnable when the clothing mentioned above is returned and the room has been inspected following the end of your employment

  • This job is subject to 1 month's trial.]


Personal Qualities :

Successful candidate will be hard working and be keen to succeed in a busy equine environment



Skills Required :

Experience with horses will be beneficial



Future Prospects :

Possibility of Level 3 Senior Groom on completion of Level 2
