Job Description

To train in all aspects of Pad Printing and colour preparation for all flatware items, including plates, bowls and decorative items. The pad printing process is in two parts, back stamping and decorative pad printing. Both parts of the process are similar and require the transfer of print from an engraved plate onto a component. A full overview of how the machinery works and the key safety points will be identified before anyone is allowed near to the equipment. Once a competence level has been achieved a full induction on to the equipment will be given and the Safety Operating Procedure signed.                                                                          



It should be noted that the making equipment at Burgess & Leigh Limited requires operator interface and is therefore not fully interlocked, as would be expected with a new automated machine i.e. there are no light guards or fully interlocked guards, so we rely on the competence and training of our operators to keep themselves and us safe.




  • To understand how to set up both the back stamping machine as well as the pad printing machine including colour application, pad pressure set-up and wiper blade configuration.

  • To learn how do identify when pads are worn and require replacement and to log pad usage.

  • Learn how to set up machine and to adjust any tooling to make sure the pad pressure and scraper configuration are to the standard set for each colour/pattern.

  • Assist in the production of Work Instructions capturing machine set-up data and specific component standards.

  • Assist in the development and introduction of shadow boards for tooling and tie this into the Work instructions.

  • Maintain and develop good working relationships with colleagues.

  • To communicate effectively both written and verbally.

  • Assist in the maintaining of a clean and tidy working environment.

  • Assist in maintaining a healthy, safe and secure working environment and act in accordance with the company policies and procedure.

  • Undertake and other work required by management which is commensurate with the responsibility of the post.

  • Other:

  • Training/knowledge will be given in any associated production areas to ensure a knowledge of any up/down stream processes are fully understood. For this role these areas will be:

  • Pad manufacture: To understand the manufacture of the pad and how its profile relates to the efficient pick up and transfer of colour. To understand the relationship between the profile of the pad and how it interacts with the engraving/polymer.

  • Biscuit Cleaning: To understand how the surface texture and storage of the biscuit ware can have an effect on the printing quality.

  • Maintenance: To understand how the equipment is maintained and why.

  • Kiln Firing: To understand how the print is fired onto the biscuit body, the importance of cleanliness when assembling plates for firing.

  • Colour: To understand how colour is produced and to also assist in colour mixing for other processes in the factory.
