Job Description

Downyfield Carriages in Middleton near Morecambe are looking to recruit an Equine Apprentice to assist in the day-to-day running of their busy horse drawn carriage business. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone with a keen interest in horses and horse riding and will provide you with the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills within the equine industry.



The role is varied and duties would include:




  • mucking out

  • grooming

  • cleaning harness and carriages

  • general yard duty.



We need a person that is a capable rider, breaking horses to ride and drive. On the job training will be given. Daily driving, lessons will be given in driving. Pairs and team driving.



The ideal candidate would be local to the area, keen to learn, hardworking, reliable, be confident handling horses and have a good level of riding ability.



You will work 40 hours per week between 8am (earliest start) and 5pm (latest finish), Monday to Friday with some occasional weekend work required. Please indicate shift patterns and breaks where applicable. Times may vary depending on the season but this will be discussed at interview. Due to legal restrictions, young people aged 16-17 cannot work more than 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week



You will be paid a minimum of £3.50 per hour. This will reviewed throughout the programme and may increase depending on performance and progression.



Training will be provided by Myerscough College towards the Level 2 Apprenticeship in Horse Care, through a Work-based blended delivery programme consisting predominantly of on-site training and assessment within the workplace, supported by off-site technical training at Myerscough College one day per week during term time.


Personal Qualities :

The ideal candidate must be keen to learn, enjoy a challenge, be honest, hardworking, reliable and personable and have a keen interest in horses & horse riding.



Skills Required :

The ability to work as part of a team or on own initiative. You must be confident around horses & riding them.



You will be subject to interview and an initial ride and vocational skills assessment, therefore previous riding experience is essential.



Future Prospects : Possibility to progress on to the Advanced Apprenticeship.
