Job Description

Laura's Swim Academy is looking for one apprentice to complete an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Coaching Learn to Swim in Coleshill, working across sites in Sutton Coldfield, Coventry and Olton.



The successful candidate will recieve a 2year contract (1st year Apprenticeship and 2nd year self employed). 



This apprenticeship is designed for those individuals wishing to pursue a career in the leisure industry through a teaching route; it is entirely work based and work related. The swimming programme gives you a wide range of knowledge and experience, and most importantly the qualifications to help you develop a career within the leisure industry. At the end of this apprenticeship you will be a fully qualified swimming teacher, with the ability to teach lessons to groups of swimmers from beginners to experienced, children to adults.



About swimming teachers



Swimming teachers help people of all ages and abilities to develop swimming skills and techniques, or exercise in water. Swimming coaches train competitive swimmers. If you are a good swimmer, and you could motivate and inspire others to develop their skills, this job could suit you well. To be good at this job you would need to be able to encourage people and put them at their ease. You would also need to have perseverance and patience with slower learners.



As a qualified swimming teacher you would:




  • Teach or coach one-to-one or in groups

  • Plan and deliver sessions appropriate to the level of swimmer

  • Provide explanations and demonstrate swimming techniques

  • Correct faults in swimming techniques and identify ways to improve performance

  • Make sure safety standards are followed

  • Organise and supervise assistants and helpers



The types of jobs associate with this apprenticeship programme are:




  • Assistant Swimming Teacher 

  • Swimming Teacher

  • Swimming Coordinator 

  • Recreation Assistant 




Whilst training the successful apprentice will assist the owner of the swim school with the following responsibilities:




  • Teaching 

  • Planning lessons & researching information about teaching swimming

  • Helping correct swimming faults

  • Learning how to break down teaching practices & how to interact with the clients (different teaching styles for different age/ability levels)

  • Dealing with clients & new customers on poolside

  • Signing clients in on the register

  • Taking messages from clients

  • Giving out certificates & stock checking



Apprentices will be required to work across the following teaching venues:



  • The Belfry - wishaw, Sutton coldfield, B76 9PR

  • New Hall Primary School and Children's Centre, Langley Hall Drive, Sutton Coldfield, B75 7NQ

  • Jaguar sports & Social - Fenton road, allesley, Coventry, CV5 9PS

  • Bablake school - Coundon road, Coventry, CV1 4AU

  • The Dive Centre - Lincoln road, Olton. B27 6PA

  • Coleshill (Home Office)



Please note the wage will increase, once the candidate is teaching their own lessons.

Skills Required :

  • An interest and ability in swimming (don't need to be great at swimming as you will be given all knowledge and shown everything to become a great instructor) The main requirement is being great with children of all ages and being very patient!

  • The ability to encourage people and put them at ease.

  • Perseverance and patience.

  • Good spoken communication skills.

  • Good organisational skills.

  • Good timekeeping skills.

  • Motivated.
