Job Description


Do you enjoy working outdoors and at the same time working where you can take pride in the community? Then you are the person we are looking for. The council is looking to recruit 3 full time apprentices within its grounds maintenance team operating from the Council Depot in Witney.  Full training will be given to the right candidates in various areas including sports turf maintenance, herbicide and pesticides applications, floral displays and bedding, and general day to day work with machinery.



 A uniform will be provided and benefits include a minimum of 24 days annual leave plus bank holidays, generous final salary pension scheme, and discounted membership of the Council’s leisure facilities.

The Job requirements



You will be fully trained in the following:




  • Machine maintenance procedures and operating requirements

  • Health and safety at work legislation

  • Be part of a team maintaining the District's portfolio

  • Learn and qualify in how to apply herbicides and pesticides

  • Have a creative flare for planting floral displays

  • Maintain cricket and croquet squares to county standards

  • Maintain and improve football pitches

  • Work towards attaining a full driving licence

    There will be a need to take a flexible approach to the working environment, for instance periodically adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain, prolonged freezing conditions mean that some services are suspended and staff are redeployed into areas such as winter salting of roads, paths and car parks, flood defence is essential and the council operates an emergency plan to cater for this, it is likely the apprentice will experience this type of activity for which further training will be given.

  • A flexible and willing attitude.

  • Physically fit enough to cope with tasks involving bending and lifting.



Skills Required :

Essential Criteria (it is essential that applicants satisfy the criteria listed in boxes A to E)



A. Skills and Abilities




  • A willingness to attend college on a regular basis or to undertake an appropriate course of study and a willingness to work hard towards achieving a successful outcome.

  • A track record of high levels of attendance and punctuality.

  • A willingness to participate fully in a personal training programme, transferring between Service Units, where appropriate.

  • Basic literacy at the level of writing telephone messages, etc.

  • An ability to work, or to learn to work, as a member of a team.

  • A willingness to attend a week long residential course where team work and personal development will be encouraged.

  • An ability, or willingness to learn, how to communicate effectively and with colleagues and others from a variety of backgrounds.



B. Knowledge




  • An understanding of horticulture and general grounds maintenance

  • Basic understanding of machinery plant.

  • Have strong awareness regarding H&S in the work place

  • Be able to pass information on to other when asked about training



C. Work Related Experience (including voluntary/unpaid work)



D. Qualifications – Basic Maths, English, PE and DT



E. Circumstances - Work area is a non smoking environment.

  • Past local or part time working

  • Interest and hobbies within the environment

  • Proven track record with voluntary groups such as scouts/ guide



 



 



 



Future Prospects : Apprentices will be eligible to apply for any permanent positions that may arise on completion of the apprenticeship.
